The Joy of Humility: John the Baptist’s Testimony About Jesus (John 3:22-36)

Scripture: John 3:22-36 (NIV)

“After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. This was before John was put in prison. An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing. They came to John and said to him, ‘Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.’ To this John replied, ‘A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. You yourselves can testify that I said, “I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.” The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater; I must become less.’”

This passage takes us into a significant moment in John the Baptist’s ministry, where he gives a profound testimony about Jesus Christ's supremacy. The narrative begins with Jesus and His disciples baptizing in the Judean countryside, a scene that sparked concern among John the Baptist’s disciples. They noticed that more people were going to Jesus to be baptized, and this seemed to create some tension or jealousy among them.

John’s disciples brought their concern to him, pointing out that the one John had testified about was now drawing larger crowds. This could have been a moment of rivalry, but John’s response is a powerful lesson in humility and understanding one’s role in God’s plan.

“A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.” John the Baptist acknowledges that all authority and influence are ultimately given by God. He understood that his role was not to compete with Jesus but to prepare the way for Him. This statement reminds us that our gifts, callings, and opportunities come from God. We should embrace our unique roles with humility, recognizing that we are part of a larger plan.

John then uses the metaphor of a bride and bridegroom to further clarify his position. “The bride belongs to the bridegroom.” In this analogy, Jesus is the bridegroom, and the people are the bride. John sees himself as the friend of the bridegroom—his joy comes from witnessing the union between the bride and groom, not from being the center of attention. “That joy is mine, and it is now complete.” John finds fulfillment in seeing Jesus’ ministry flourish, knowing that his purpose was to point others to Christ.

“He must become greater; I must become less.” This statement encapsulates the heart of John’s testimony and his deep humility. John understood that his mission was to decrease as Jesus’ mission increased. This is a powerful message for us as well. In our lives and ministries, we are called to magnify Jesus, allowing His presence and glory to shine through, even if it means stepping back ourselves.

The passage concludes with John’s powerful affirmation of who Jesus is: “The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all.” John acknowledges Jesus’ divine origin and authority. He affirms that Jesus speaks the words of God and that eternal life comes through belief in Him. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.” This final statement underscores the importance of believing in Jesus for salvation.

Key Lessons for Our Daily Lives:

  1. Embrace Humility in Your Calling: John the Baptist’s example teaches us to embrace our roles with humility, recognizing that everything we have is a gift from God. Reflect on your own life—are there areas where you need to step back and allow Jesus to take the lead? How can you better align your purpose with God’s greater plan?

  2. Find Joy in Magnifying Jesus: Like John, our greatest joy should come from seeing Jesus glorified in our lives and the lives of others. Consider how you can make Jesus greater in your daily actions, words, and relationships. What steps can you take to ensure that your life points others to Christ?

  3. Understand Your Role in God’s Plan: John understood that his role was to prepare the way for Jesus, not to compete with Him. Reflect on how you can better understand and fulfill your unique role in God’s kingdom. How can you support and encourage others in their callings as well?

  4. Believe in the Supremacy of Jesus: John’s testimony reaffirms Jesus’ divine authority and the importance of believing in Him for eternal life. Examine your own faith. Are you fully trusting in Jesus as the Son of God and the source of eternal life? How does this belief shape the way you live each day?

A Prayer for Today:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of humility and joy that John the Baptist displayed in his ministry. Help us to embrace our own roles with humility, finding our greatest joy in magnifying Jesus and pointing others to Him. May we fully trust in Your plan for our lives, recognizing that every gift and opportunity comes from You. Strengthen our faith in Jesus as the source of eternal life, and guide us in living out that faith daily. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
