The Answer in the Midst of the Solution
In the hustle of daily life, we often find ourselves scrambling for solutions—solutions to problems at work, at home, in our relationships, or even within our own hearts. We can become so laser-focused on finding a way out of our challenges that we miss something crucial: the answer has been with us all along.
The pursuit of solutions is not inherently wrong. In fact, God has given us wisdom and creativity to solve problems. But there’s a danger when our focus shifts entirely to the solution, and we take our eyes off the One who is the ultimate answer—God Himself.
Psalm 22 is a powerful reflection of this tension. It opens with words of deep despair:
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?"(Psalm 22:1, NIV)
David, the writer, is in the depths of a crisis, searching for a solution, crying out for rescue. Yet as the psalm progresses, something shifts. David doesn't find a quick solution to his problem, but he finds the answer—the presence of God.
In verses 3-4, we read:
"Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises. In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them."
David remembers that God has always been faithful, even when solutions seemed far off. His heart turns from seeking a solution to acknowledging the Answer—the God who is with him, even in the darkest moments.
The Difference Between a Solution and the Answer
A solution is often specific and temporal. It might bring us temporary relief or satisfaction, but it's rarely the end of the story. We might solve one problem, only for another to arise. But the answer—Jesus Christ—is constant. He doesn’t merely bring temporary fixes; He offers eternal hope.
In our quest for solutions, we must not lose sight of Him. Jesus is the answer to our deepest needs, not just because He can solve our problems, but because His presence transforms our perspective. Like David in Psalm 22, we can be honest about our struggles and still trust in God’s faithfulness.
The answer is not always the removal of our pain, but the deep assurance that God is with us in it.
Learning to Trust in the Answer
When we shift our focus from finding solutions to seeking the Answer, everything changes. The burden of "figuring it out" is lifted, and we are reminded that God is in control.
In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul encourages us:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Notice the order here: it’s not that God promises to instantly solve our problems, but He promises peace—a peace that comes when we focus on Him rather than the solution. He guards our hearts and minds when we trust the Answer over the solution.
Practical Application: Shifting Our Focus
Begin with Worship – Instead of starting your day by obsessing over the problems that need solving, start by worshiping the Answer. Like David, remember God’s faithfulness in the past and let that build your trust for the future.
Pray for Peace, Not Just Solutions – When you bring your needs to God, ask Him for His peace to guard your heart and mind, trusting that He is working even when the solution isn’t clear.
Seek His Presence First – Before trying to fix your situation, seek God’s presence in it. The answer you need may not be a changed circumstance but a changed perspective.
In a world where we are constantly searching for solutions, let’s remember to seek the Answer. Jesus is with us, and His presence is the greatest solution to any challenge we may face.
