Jesus Walks on Water (John 6:15-21)

Scripture: John 6:15-21 (ESV)

“Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. But he said to them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid.’ Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.”

In this passage, we witness another of Jesus' miraculous signs: walking on water. This event occurs immediately after the feeding of the five thousand. The crowd, amazed by Jesus’ ability to provide miraculously, desires to make Him king by force. Jesus, knowing that their intentions are driven by a desire for a political savior rather than a spiritual one, withdraws to the mountain alone to pray. This decision reflects Jesus' commitment to His divine mission and His refusal to conform to the people’s expectations.

As evening falls, the disciples set out across the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum without Jesus. Darkness sets in, and a strong wind begins to blow, causing the sea to become rough. The disciples are caught in the middle of a storm, rowing with all their might but making little progress. It is in this moment of fear and uncertainty that Jesus appears, walking on the water towards them. This sight understandably terrifies the disciples, who do not yet comprehend who it is approaching them in such a miraculous way.

Jesus speaks to them, saying, “It is I; do not be afraid.” These words are filled with comfort and assurance. “It is I” is more than a simple self-identification; it echoes the divine name “I AM” that God used in the Old Testament, subtly reminding the disciples of His divine identity and presence. Jesus' command not to be afraid is an invitation to trust in His power and presence, even in the midst of the storm.

As Jesus enters the boat, the storm ceases, and the disciples find themselves immediately at their destination. This sudden arrival reinforces the miraculous nature of the entire event and demonstrates Jesus’ authority over nature. The narrative shows us that Jesus is not only a provider of physical needs but also the sovereign Lord over all creation, able to calm the most tumultuous storms with His presence.

Key Lessons for Our Daily Lives:

  1. Seeking Solitude with God: Before walking on water, Jesus withdraws to a mountain alone, demonstrating His need for communion with the Father. Despite the demands of ministry and the pressure of the crowds, Jesus prioritizes solitude and prayer. Reflect on how you can create space for intentional time with God in your own life, especially when feeling pressured or overwhelmed by life's demands.

  2. Recognizing Jesus in the Storms of Life: The disciples were terrified when they saw Jesus walking on the water, not recognizing Him immediately. Often, in our own lives, we may not recognize Jesus' presence when we are facing storms or challenges. Consider how you can cultivate a greater awareness of Jesus’ presence, even in difficult circumstances. Are there times when fear has overshadowed your ability to see Jesus?

  3. Trusting Jesus’ Words: Jesus reassures His disciples with the words, “It is I; do not be afraid.” These words are a powerful reminder to trust in His presence and not be overwhelmed by fear. Reflect on the storms you are currently facing in your life. How can you apply Jesus’ comforting words to your situation? Trust that His presence is enough to calm your fears and provide peace.

  4. Understanding Jesus’ Authority Over Nature: Jesus walking on water and calming the storm demonstrates His authority over all creation. This miracle shows that no situation is beyond His control. In what areas of your life do you need to trust in Jesus’ authority? Are there challenges or uncertainties where you need to rely on His power rather than your own strength?

  5. Experiencing Peace in Jesus’ Presence: When Jesus entered the boat, the storm ceased, and the disciples arrived safely at their destination. This sudden calm shows the peace that comes with Jesus' presence. Reflect on how you can invite Jesus into the “boat” of your life, especially in moments of chaos or confusion. His presence brings peace and direction, guiding us safely through our journeys.

A Prayer for Today:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Son, Jesus, who demonstrates His power and presence even in the midst of life’s storms. Help us to recognize Him in our challenges and to trust in His words, “Do not be afraid.” Teach us to seek solitude with You, just as Jesus did, and to trust in His authority over all things. May we experience the peace that comes from inviting Jesus into our lives, knowing that He guides us safely through every storm. Strengthen our faith and deepen our trust in You each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
