Embracing the Authority of the Son (John 5:16-23)

Scripture: John 5:16-23 (ESV)

“And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, 'My Father is working until now, and I am working.' This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. So Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.'”

In this passage, we encounter a profound moment where Jesus confronts the religious leaders' misunderstanding of His identity and authority. After healing a man on the Sabbath, Jesus faces intense opposition from the Jewish leaders who accuse Him of breaking the Sabbath law. Jesus responds by declaring His unity with the Father: “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” This statement is radical because it not only defends His actions but also asserts His divine identity and authority, claiming equality with God.

The religious leaders are outraged, seeing Jesus’ claim as blasphemy, but Jesus goes further to explain His unique relationship with the Father. He emphasizes that He can do nothing independently but only what He sees the Father doing. This submission and obedience underscore the perfect unity and harmony between the Father and the Son. Jesus reveals that just as the Father has the power to raise the dead and give life, so too does the Son. Moreover, the Father has entrusted all judgment to the Son, meaning that honoring the Son is inseparable from honoring the Father.

This passage highlights the authority and divinity of Jesus. It calls us to recognize that Jesus is not just a prophet or teacher but the Son of God, who operates with the full authority of the Father. It challenges us to honor Jesus as we honor the Father, understanding that the relationship between the Father and the Son is foundational to our faith.

Key Lessons for Our Daily Lives:

  1. Recognizing Jesus’ Divine Authority: Jesus clearly states that His works are a direct reflection of the Father’s will and actions. In our daily lives, we must recognize and submit to Jesus’ authority as the Son of God. Reflect on how you view Jesus—do you see Him merely as a historical figure, or do you honor Him as the divine Son who holds all authority?

  2. Understanding Unity with the Father: Jesus’ relationship with the Father is marked by unity and complete alignment of will and purpose. As followers of Christ, we are called to seek unity with God’s will, aligning our actions and desires with His purpose. Consider areas in your life where you may need to seek greater alignment with God’s will. How can you more closely follow the example of Jesus in obedience and unity?

  3. Embracing the Role of Jesus as Judge: Jesus is given authority over all judgment, emphasizing His role not only as Savior but also as Judge. This truth should lead us to live with a sense of accountability, knowing that our lives are ultimately subject to Jesus’ righteous judgment. Reflect on how this perspective impacts the way you live your life and make decisions.

  4. Honoring the Son and the Father: Jesus teaches that honoring the Son is essential to honoring the Father. Our relationship with God must encompass a full acceptance of Jesus’ divinity and His role in our salvation and judgment. How do you honor Jesus in your daily life? Consider ways to deepen your reverence and worship of Him, acknowledging His rightful place as the Son of God.

A Prayer for Today:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for revealing Yourself through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to understand and embrace the full authority of Jesus as Your Son, who is worthy of all honor and praise. Guide us in aligning our will with Yours and in living with the awareness of Jesus’ role as our Savior and Judge. May our lives reflect a deep honor for both the Son and the Father, and may we grow in unity with Your purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
